She alleged these often lead to interference in political elections. In this interview with Chitranshu Tewari, Sophie describes the suspicious patterns of behaviour she observed in 2019 with respect to India. On the company’s reluctance to act on matters involving fake accounts in India, she points at “political pressure and the general lack of motivation of the company to police its own system”. “The fact that we have such high expectations of Facebook...is perhaps a statement on the public relations that it enjoys,” she says. October 2, 2020: K Rajesh, 45, a lawyer based in Chennai, was hacked to death in front of his home. His death was attributed to a “gang war”; Rajesh was described by the police as being part of a gang who used his political connections to “hide illegal activities”. The prime suspect in the case was speedily arrested but he’s now out on bail. June 20, 2018: K Murali, 41, was murdered by five men while serving a prison sentence at Chennai’s Puzhal Jail. Murali had multiple cases against him, including three charges of murder and three charges of attempt to murder, and was an alleged “gangster”. According to the police, his murder was planned by Vyasarpadi Nagendran, a gangster and fellow inmate at Puzhal Jail. These are gruesome crimes but they’re par for the course in Chennai, where “gangsterism” thrives in the absence of stringent laws. I arrived in Hurijala on the evening of November 14. A day before, the ministry of home affairs had claimed that there had been “no reported case of damage to the structure of any masjid in Tripura in the recent past”.
