Jayarama Rao’s home in No. 99, Asiad Village, is all but empty. Earlier this week, he moved most of his belongings to his son’s house in Green Park. “I can’t bear it if the forces throw me out,” said Rao, a renowned Kuchupudi dancer. There’s a sense of tension in the area, originally developed as accommodation for athletes for the 1982 Asian Games. Of the 853 flats, 27 were allotted to artists – many of them Padma Shri awardees or holding national awards in dance, music and theatre – in 1985, officially for a period of three years, though this was extended multiple times. Some stayed until their deaths, some moved out. Approximately 12 still called Asiad Village their home – until this week. In January last year, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication announced the recruitment of six associate professors and two assistant professors. Of the six associate posts, two were reserved for OBCs, one for Dalits, and one for economically weaker sections; while the other two posts were unreserved. There was no reservation for the recruitment of the assistant professor posts. Appointments to all eight posts were completed by February-March this year. For the associate professor posts, IIMC appointed Rachna Sharma and Rakesh Kumar Upadhyay in the unreserved category; Dilip Kumar and Rajesh Kumar Kushwaha in the OBC category; Pawan Kaundal in the SC category; and Meeta Ujjain from EWS. RJD MLA and Lalu Prasad’s son Tej Pratap Yadav has said that he has filed a Rs 50 crore defamation suit against nine persons, including YouTubers and journalists associated with various outfits such as ANI, ABP, Republic Bharat and Aaj Tak. In a recent piece, sociologist Satish Deshpande talked about a new opacity that’s creeping into the understanding of caste identities, and the changes that they are witnessing in a break from the decades of caste clarity. It pointed to complex political mobilisation among backward caste groups, but argued that there were no separate political entities within the upper castes despite economic differentiation. It noted that these groups within the upper caste fold were of crucial ideological significance. However, fluidity in political behaviour can be traced among upper caste groups too, as the Bochacha assembly bypoll in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur demonstrates. The support base that helped RJD candidate Amar Paswan win the SC-reserved seat is interesting in this context. A day after exposing News18, Republic Bharat and Aaj Tak shows – about a temple and several properties in Alwar being demolished as “revenge” for the controversial bulldozer action in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri – as false, Alt News has now found that Times Now Navbharat ’s claims about “targeting” of Hindu properties were factually incorrect and communal. News channels had claimed that the incident in Congress-governed Rajasthan came after the one in Delhi. But the website found that the controversial bulldozer drive at Jahangirpuri took place on April 20, while the action against encroachment in Alwar took place on April 17 and 18. Interestingly, Times Now Navbharat , in the News Ki Paathshaala broadcast on April 22, claimed that a Muslim-owned shop was left out while Hindu properties were targeted during the drive in Alwar. Two days after journalist Naresh Vats alleged that he was barred from attending a joint press conference – by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann – and assaulted by Punjab police, the Press Club of India said the “silence” of the CMs “is an ominous pointer of their tacit approval of the incident”. The remarks come two days after the Chandigarh Press Club had also issued a statement after the incident at Imperial Hotel in Delhi on Tuesday. The Press Club of India demanded that the policemen be suspended and due compensation be given to Vats.
