The Competition Commission of India has sent a notice to Sony and Zee networks over the possibility of their proposed India merger hurting competition through “unparalleled bargaining power”, according to a Reuters report . In a 21-page notice, the watchdog said the proposed deal would place the combined entity in a "strong position" with around 92 channels in India. “Such apparently humongous market position would enable the combined entity to enjoy an unparalleled bargaining power," the CCI observed, adding the networks could increase the price of channel packages. Noting that its initial review merits further investigation, the commission gave the two companies 30 days from August 3 to respond. The Indian unit of Japan’s Sony and Zee Entertainment had in December decided to merge their media assets to create a powerhouse in a key media and entertainment growth market. To build its case against the alleged perpetrators of the Kanpur violence in June, the Uttar Pradesh police invoked a conspiracy theory: that the local Muslims were trying to “take over” Hindu land “under the guise of riots”. In a 1,500-page “proposal” to the Kanpur district magistrate outlining why the alleged “mastermind” behind the violence, Hayat Zafar Hashmi, must be booked under the National Security Act, a Special Investigation Team of the police weaved its case around half a dozen nearly identical statements from Hindu complainants. The proposal, accessed by Newslaundry, alleges that Hashmi was the architect of a plan to protest against suspended BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma’s remarks against Prophet Muhammad. Hi, I've been a subscriber for the past one year and haven't missed any Hafta or Charcha. Superbly enjoy Abhinandan's moderation of Hafta, but really wish Mr Raman would speak more. He always seems to speak from practical experiences and insights which are enjoyable. 1) I listened to a few episodes of Ye Bhi Theek Hai. While the episodes on comedians (Ep 1) and free speech (Ep 3) were really good, the others (eg. religion, secularism) showed their lack of depth in those topics. I wish they would fix a topic beforehand and do a little bit of homework at least. Facing CBI heat over Delhi’s excise policy, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Friday poked the BJP for its “indecision” on the extent of the “scam”. “One person says the corruption is of Rs 8,000 crore. Responding to disclosures by NDTV promoter RRPR Holding Private Limited, the Adani Group has said that the promoter’s contentions are “baseless” and “legally untenable”, and it is bound to “allot equity shares as specified in the warrant exercise notice”. Trying to resist a takeover of the network by the Adani Group, the RRPR – which holds over 29 percent stake in NDTV and is owned by Radhika Roy and Prannoy Roy – had claimed that a November 2020 order by the Securities and Exchange Board of India restricted them from accessing the security markets for a period of two years.
