Hafta letters: Author’s argument bigger than identity, crypto a scam

Dear NL team,

I am just writing this as a response to S last week, who suggested adding the caste and religion of authors to the bylines of NL articles.

I personally think that just adding caste and religion is not enough and we should add their annual income, their parents’ income, their home and current state, their marital status and their sexuality to the byline.

In case it’s not clear, I am being satirical. I think it is a farce to reduce individual identities to their caste or religion. Ideas (and articles) should be judged by the merits of the argument, not the source behind it. All individuals are unique and it is impossible to know or understand their motivations without going through their entire life experience.

Hi Hafta team,

There have been a lot of questions regarding crypto, asking for explainers. This two-hour video does a fantastic job at explaining cryptocurrencies and NFTs.

It’s hard for me to see it as anything other than a scam; not to mention how bad it is for the environment when we need to be cutting down emissions as fast as possible.

There is a proverbial example: The job of journalism is to look out of the window and say whether it’s raining or not. Most news outlets have just parroted the pros and cons and not taken a stance. This can be how NL’s coverage differs.

Love your work, especially this election coverage.

Thanks,

S
