A photograph by Malayala Manorama photographer J Suresh has triggered speculation that Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot brought a list of “charges” against his former deputy, Sachin Pilot, to a meeting with party president Sonia Gandhi. Gehlot was pictured arriving with a handwritten note at Gandhi’s 10 Janpath residence in Delhi on Thursday, reportedly to resolve the political crisis in the state. The crisis was triggered by the Rajasthan CM reportedly agreeing to run for the post of Congress president and his camp opposing the possible elevation of Pilot as CM. Commentators on social media and On Manorama speculated that Gehlot meant to use the list of charges to oppose Pilot’s claim to the chief ministership. Supposedly, the note indicated that Gehlot had the support of 102 MLAs as against Pilot’s 18 and that there was a possibility of his former deputy leaving the party for greener pastures. Former JNU student Sharjeel Imam has been granted bail in a sedition case accusing him of provocative speech – that allegedly led to violence in Jamia Nagar area – during protests against the citizenship law in December 2019, Live Law reported . However, he will continue to be in custody in several other cases lodged against him. This comes months after the Delhi high court asked a trial court to consider Imam’s application seeking relief on the ground that he has remained in custody for 31 months under the FIR. The Canadian High Command has clarified that no new advisory has been issued – as suggested by sections of the Indian media – in response to India’s advisory on rising hate crimes and “anti-India activities” in the North American country. It said a recent revision was only related to monkeypox and Covid. A spokesperson from the Canadian High Command reportedly said that no new updates under the “risk levels” and “safety and security” sections were made to its travel advisory for citizens travelling to India. The information has been “in place for a long period of time”, the spokesperson said. “The update made on September 27 was related only to the ‘health’ section and more specifically to the ‘Covid-19 and international travel’ and ‘monkeypox: advice for travellers’ sub-sections.” On September 23, the ministry of external affairs had issued an advisory saying that there had been a “sharp increase in incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities in Canada”.

Around 382 job positions are likely to be scrapped as the BBC World Service has proposed to restrict some of its regional language services to only the digital format, Reuters reported . The Securities and Exchange Board of India has filed civil appeals before the Supreme Court against NDTV , its founder-promoters Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy, and promoter-group vehicle RRPR. The appeal is reportedly against an order issued on July 20 by the Securities Appellate Tribunal, which found that there was “no indirect transfer of control of NDTV by the founder-promoters via loan agreements entered into in 2009-2010.” The tribunal had said that the penalties imposed by SEBI on Prannoy Roy, Radhika Roy, and others, for non-disclosure of material information to NDTV shareholders, were excessive. A penalty of Rs 25 crore imposed on the Roys and RRPR was subsequently reduced to Rs 5 crore, and this was further trimmed to Rs 10 lakh and paid earlier this month. While the Indian rupee has continued to hit record lows, editorials by prominent English dailies have differed on the role played by the Reserve Bank of India. The Indian Express criticised the RBI’s increase in interest rates, saying that the “unexpectedly hawkish commentary roiled global markets” and the central bank “should be circumspect about how it proceeds as the global economic environment becomes increasingly challenging”. In 2013, with much fanfare, India’s Supreme Court abolished manual scavenging. It sought to “correct the historical injustice and indignity suffered by manual scavengers” – and directed states to do the same. In Delhi, the government has boasted that there are no manual scavengers. So, it has no specific programmes for their rehabilitation either. Three years ago, the Arvind Kejriwal government bought 200 machines to take over the work of cleaning sewage. Yet manual scavenging continues – around 46 manual scavengers died in Delhi in just the last five years.
