Over 380 job positions likely to be shut as BBC proposes to close some regional language services

Around 382 job positions are likely to be scrapped as the BBC World Service has proposed to restrict some of its regional language services to only the digital format, Reuters reported. This includes the network’s Chinese and Urdu services.

The step is aimed at reducing costs, Reuters journalist Yuvraj Malik tweeted.

Malik posted a proposal which also mentions that the BBC will shut radio services in Arabic, Bangla and Persian and also “some TV programming on local broadcasters across Africa and Asia”.

The broadcaster will be “focusing on our own platforms and presence in the markets, and reducing the volume of syndicated TV and radio content on partners’ platforms on some territories”.

The BBC has said that its proposals were subject to consultation with staff and trade unions, according to Reuters.
