Global press groups have condemned Russia’s detention of a Wall Street Journal reporter on charges of “espionage”. Evan Gershkovich, 31, was detained in Yekaterinburg on Wednesday. Russia alleged he had “collected information classified as a state secret” and had been “acting on US instruction”, BBC reported .  The US condemned the detention “in the strongest possible terms”, calling it part of “the Kremlin’s continued attempts to intimidate, repress, and punish journalists and civil society voices”. The Wall Street Journal “vehemently” denied the allegations against Gershkovich and sought “the immediate release of our trusted and dedicated reporter”. Reporters Without Borders issued a statement asking Russian authorities to “clarify the espionage charges” against Gershkovich, describing it as “an arrest that is unprecedented since the Cold War”. “There is no indication that this recognised journalist was doing anything other than legitimate investigative reporting in the fiel

The International Federation of Journalists yesterday condemned “government censorship, press blackouts and restriction of journalists’ social media accounts” in Punjab as a fallout of the search for Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh. It described these moves as “dire impositions on press freedom and democracy in India”. In a statement , the group urged Indian authorities to “respect freedom of expression and access to information and immediately cease all restrictions on journalists and media workers”. The crackdown on Singh has spanned two weeks so far. The fugitive leader went live on YouTube yesterday saying he won’t surrender, two days after the Punjab government told the high court it was “close” to arresting him. Multiple Twitter accounts have been withheld in India during this search for Singh, including accounts belonging to journalists . Most recently, BBC Punjabi ’s Twitter account was withheld in India on March 28 “in response to a legal demand”. Internet services

It has been barely a week since the Janata Dal (United) reiterated the key role of the Congress in any viable alliance of opposition parties in national politics. This was in line with what Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar had said at a rally in Haryana last year. But that hasn’t meant that Nitish has been vociferous in joining the protest against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a defamation case. Instead, Nitish’s cryptic response has yet again sparked attempts to read possible clues – also running the risk of overreading them. Nitish chose not to engage with the question of Rahul’s disqualification. In February 2022, the central government revoked MediaOne’s security clearance “for reasons of national security and public order.” The Malayalam news channel challenged the ban in the Kerala High Court and asked why it was taken off the air. The central government produced documents explaining why – but handed it over to the court in a sealed cover. The high court upheld the ban based on these documents that MediaOne never got to see, assess or use to tailor its defense. Twenty-three years ago, Robin Jeffrey, a professor of politics at Melbourne’s La Trobe University, had described Ramnath Goenka’s “ Indian Express empire” as the “grandest version of newspapers with some link to the ‘freedom struggle’” in his book. When Goenka died in 1991, Jeffrey wrote in India’s Newspaper Revolution: Capitalism, Politics and the Indian-Language Press (1977-99)  that “his newspapers were published in cities and towns in every region of India except Calcutta and the east.” But the Indian Express was not started by Goenka. It was started in 1932 by Varadarajulu Naidu, an ayurvedic doctor and Congressman. According to Warrior of the Fourth Estate by BG Verghese, the newspaper was priced at one anna and published by Naidu’s Tamil Nadu press. “Muslims in Uttar Pradesh are happy with the efforts of PM Modi and CM Yogi,” declared a news segment aired on Times Now Navbharat on January 19. It relied on a ground report from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi, where an event had been organised by an outfit called Vishal Bharat Sansthan. he telecast came the same day the ministry of external affairs had issued its first remarks on the controversial BBC documentary series on the 2002 Gujarat riots and PM Narendra Modi’s relationship with Indian Muslims. The MEA had termed it a “propaganda piece”, two days after the BBC premiered the series in the UK. The nearly eight-minute-long ground report on Times Now Navbharat , meanwhile, featured several bytes from participants, mostly Muslim clerics, at the event called Jalsa-e-Ulmaye-Islam.
