Constant harassment and hate-spewing have led a Hyderabad-based woman journalist to say she is likely to be killed soon.  In a long, emotional post on Facebook on June 24, independent journalist Thulasi Chandu said she was being “hated and abused for telling people that communal hatred is harmful for the youth of any country”. “...My photos are being morphed. One day, some innocent youngster fed with hatred by the party he loved will turn that hatred into a bullet or a sword,” she wrote. “Nobody will come to defend me...No group will stand for me because I don't have any sort of identity including an identity card that is given to journalists by the government. I cannot do anything other than giving these explanations. One day I will fall, be killed. At least 194 journalists in India were “targeted” by government agencies, non-state political actors, criminals, and armed opposition groups in 2022, as per data encapsulated by Delhi-based think tank Rights and Risks Analysis Group. It mentioned that 103 journalists were under government officials’ radar, while the remaining 91 were targeted by the non-state actors, including political activists. Of the 91 journalists attacked by non-state political actors, “at least 41 were targeted by armed opposition groups in Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur and the Naxal affected areas”, the report said.      Of the journalists subjected to police arrest, detention, court cases or even physical assault, Jammu and Kashmir had the highest count at 48. Telangana was closely behind, with 40 journalists targeted there. Two days after a journalist in Unnao was allegedly shot at, the Uttar Pradesh police is yet to register an FIR in the matter, and said they are awaiting a complaint from his family, the Indian Express reported . Around 10 pm on Saturday, Mannu Awasthi, 25, was reportedly shot at while riding a scooter in an area under the Kotwal police station. His condition is said to be stable.  Three months ago, Awasthi had lodged a complaint on being threatened by members of the land mafia over his reportage on them. “I am being threatened on the phone… If I am attacked or anyone from my family is, these people will be responsible,” he had also said in a video following the FIR. He had alleged that he was being followed and harassed. On Saturday, Awasthi was taken to the district hospital in a scooter with injuries on his right shoulder. Hailing the first all-party meeting on the situation in Manipur, editorials in prominent English dailies have pointed out the need for the Centre to do more to kickstart the political reconciliation process as “boots on the ground are no replacement”. मंजुल सत्ता से सच बोलने के लिए, कार्टून एक बहुत ही पुरानी और साहसिक विधा है. हालांकि भारत में कार्टूनिस्टों पर, चाहे वह मीडिया में हों या फिर उसके बाहर, अपनी स्वतंत्र अभिव्यक्ति को सीमित कर देने का दबाव है जिससे वे सत्तारूढ़ लोगों को चिढ़ा न दें, जिसमें वो निपुण हैं. उन्हें सेंसर किया जा रहा है या फिर वे खुद को सेंसर करने के लिए मजबूर हैं.  न्यूज़लॉन्ड्री पर संपादकीय कार्टूनिस्ट मंजुल का यह साप्ताहिक स्तंभ (सो स्केची) इस दबाव को कम करने का एक प्रयास है. हम कार्टून के ज़रिए से राजनीतिक टिप्पणी की ख़त्म होती परंपरा को पुनर्जीवित करना चाहते हैं. यह एक ऐसा माध्यम है जिसे अब पहले से कहीं ज़्यादा पुरस्कृत करने की ज़रूरत है, न कि सेंसर करने की. सो स्केची इसी दिशा में बढ़ता एक कदम है. हम इससे कहीं ज्यादा करना चाहते हैं और उसके लिए आपका सहयोग आवश्यक है, क्योंकि हम केवल आपके समर्थन से ही चलते हैं. हमारा  सहयोग  करें: क्या मीडिया सत्ता या कॉर्पोरेट हितों के बजाय जनता के हित में काम कर सकता है? बिल्कुल कर सकता है, लेकिन तभी जब वह धन के लिए सत्ता या कॉरपोरेट स्रोतों के बजाय जनता पर निर्भर हो.

An Asianet journalist accused of a criminal conspiracy to defame a Students’ Federation of India leader in Kerala has moved the Kerala high court seeking quashing of the FIR against her, according to a LiveLaw report. Akhila Nandakumar, a chief reporter with Asianet News in Ernakulam, faces an FIR filed under several IPC sections, including 120B (criminal conspiracy), 465 (forgery) and 500 (defamation). The Kerala police booked her and four others earlier this month in a complaint filed by SFI state secretary PM Arsho.  This was after Akhila reported that Arsho, a master’s student at Maharaja’s College, had purportedly passed his third-semester exams without appearing for them.   Read all about the case here . The high court will hear the matter on June 27. The prosecution, meanwhile, told the court that no coercive action will be taken against the journalist until the next hearing, according to LiveLaw . The Kerala Union of Working Journalists had organised a march on June 1
