On a rainy day in Patna, Tejashwi Yadav drove an SUV to bring four MLAs to the Bihar legislative assembly building. Yadav, the leader of the opposition, drove the vehicle himself. The MLAs were all from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, or AIMIM, and they were heading to meet the speaker to convey their decision to join Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal. With this decision, the AIMIM, headed by Asaduddin Owasi, lost four of its five MLAs in the Bihar assembly. After authorities in the Philippines ordered Rappler to shut shop, investigative news platform’s founder, Nobel laureate Maria Ressa, decried “highly irregular” proceedings and said the news organisation couldn’t count on the rule of law anymore. Rappler has been embroiled in legal tussles ever since its credentials were first revoked in 2018, after the authorities claimed it had sold control to a foreign entity in breach of foreign ownership restrictions. Rappler denied its US investor funding was in breach of the law. In the latest ruling, the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission upheld the previous decision saying the commission as well as the courts found that the revenue model was unconstitutional. Leading English newspapers today united in reporting last night's arrest of Alt News cofounder Mohammed Zubair – an arrest described by the Committee to Protect Journalists as "another low for press freedom in India". The city of Thane was close to Bal Thackeray’s heart. It was where the party first tasted electoral victory in 1967 by winning the civic polls, which would be closely followed by similar victories in Mumbai and Nashik. It was also once the fiefdom of legendary Sena leader Anand Dighe – known to run his territory free from interference from Bal Thackeray himself. Dighe died in 2001. Today, his protégé, Eknath Shinde, is a thorn in the side of Bal Thackeray’s son Uddhav, the chief minister of Maharashtra. Shinde is the leader of the rebellion against Uddhav’s leadership that’s now roiling the Shiv Sena and threatens to bring down its Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition government. YouTube has slapped a warning on a recent episode of NDTV India ’s show “Prime Time with Ravish Kumar”. “The following content has been identified by the YouTube community as inappropriate or offensive to some audiences,” the warning reads. This is noteworthy for two reasons. One, such warnings are rarely, if ever, put on news shows. Two, several other news platforms that have run the same video for which NDTV is apparently being punished have escaped the stricture. They include India Today , Hindustan Times , Times of India , and ABP News . The video purportedly shows the police in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, thrashing a group of Muslims who had been detained during protests against now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s derogatory comments on Prophet Muhammad. It was first shared by Uttar Pradesh legislator Shalab Mani Tripathi on Twitter on June 11. Tripathi had referred to the police thrashing the men as a “return gift to the rebels”. The Saharanpur police have denied th
