Mumbai police has registered an FIR against unidentified individuals for sending death and rape threats to journalist Rana Ayyub on Twitter and Instagram, Hindustan Times reported . Ayyub had filed a complaint with the cyber cell of Mumbai police after receiving threats over her tweets criticising Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the Yemen war and her column in the Washington Post which has been critical of the Narendra Modi government. On January 25, Ayyub had tweeted that she had received more than 26,000 abusive tweets. She claimed that most tweets were from “Indian right-wing” and Saudi nationalists “who are attacking me after I posted a tweet in solidarity with Yemen and calling out the Saudis”. 26.4 thousand tweets, most are abusive, rape and death threats, calling me a terror sympathiser. कोलकाता से कोई 70 किलोमीटर दूर बशीरहाट ब्लॉक के पश्चिम पाड़ा गांव में 65 साल की सोइबा बाला बार-बार आर्सेनिक पर अपनी व्यथा बयां कर थक चुकी हैं. करीब 15 साल पहले उनके पति निरंजन बाला की मौत आर्सेनिकोसिस से हो गई. वह बांग्ला में अपने परिवार की आपबीती हमें सुनाती हैं. हताशा और बेबसी से कहती हैं कि 15 सालों में आर्सेनिक समस्या पर बात करने के लिए डॉक्टरों, रिसर्चरों, स्वयंसेवी संगठनों और पत्रकारों की सैकड़ों टीमों को अपने गांव में आते देखा लेकिन हालात नहीं बदले. “जब आप जैसे लोग आते हैं तो मेरा मन उनसे बात करने को नहीं होता,” सोइबा कहती हैं. उनका दर्द अपने और पूरे गांव के हालात को लेकर है. “आप जानते हो मेरे घर के पांच लोग (आर्सेनिक से) मरे हैं. यहां (पड़ोस में) एक पूरा परिवार खत्म हो गया है. इधर आप जो भी घर देख रहे हैं सब जगह कैंसर (के बीमार) हैं. यहां बहुत सी कम उम्र की विधवाएं हैं. उन सबके पति मर गए. हम बड़े कष्ट में हैं. बहुत लोग आए. एक बार नहीं कई बार और सालों साल यहां (मेडिकल) कैंप लगे हैं. कभी यहां, कभी वहां. जहां भी खाली जगह दिखी या फिर स्कूल में भी कैंप लगे,” वो बताती हैं. सोइबा ब

The annual budget for fiscal year (FY) 2022-23 will be released tomorrow. This is the second “Covid budget” that finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will announce. After the New York Times reported on the Indian government buying the Pegasus spyware as part of a larger arms deal in 2017, the Editors Guild of India urged a Supreme Court-appointed committee to take cognisance of the report's claims. The committee, headed by retired Justice RV Raveendran, was formed in October to investigate the use of the spyware, developed by Israel's NSO Group, against Indian citizens. In a statement released on Sunday, the guild said it had written to Justice Raveendran in this regard. The Indian government bought Isreali spyware Pegasus as part of a larger arms deal in 2017, according to an investigative report by the New York Times . The report, published on Friday, revealed that in 2017, India and Israel agreed to a $2 billion sale of a “package” of weapons and intelligence gear. It further stated that Pegasus and a missile system were the “centerpieces” of this deal. In April 2017, it was reported that India had inked a $2 billion deal with Israel Aerospace Industries for supply of air defence missiles to the Indian Army. The NYT report reveals how Israel reaped diplomatic gains around the world from NSO’s Pegasus spyware﹘a tool America itself purchased but is now trying to ban.
